Natural, Non-Toxic, Eco friendly soy wax candles

“Guardian, defender, and protector” are what each of us is capable of because we have an instinct to keep the danger away from us, our loved ones, and our next generations. Every decision, purchase, and choice are influential. Welcome back ADKers.  Today, we want to present you with information about types of candle waxes, the benefits of soy wax candles, and the potential usages for a soy wax candle.

Climate change is a well-known public topic, discussed by scientists, advocators, and politicians. Multiple actionable approaches exist for us to manage the encountered challenges, including following the Sustainable Development Goals blueprint developed by the United Nations  being cautious about purchases we make, or finding ecological alternatives. For instance, Bill Gates invested millions into companies that make synthetic goop as a substitute for meat. An alternative is soy plant-based meat because some believe that producing real meat may initiate more greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to plant-based meat, do you know that we can make a soy wax candle out of soybeans?

Candle Wax Types

Before starting, let’s talk about several common types of candle waxes introduced by different professionals (links are included in the reference).

  • Paraffin Wax
  • Gel Wax
  • Beeswax
  • Coconut Wax
  • Palm Wax
  • Soy Wax Candle

A. Affordable Vegan Friendly Choice

1. Palm Wax Candle

The main component of this type of vegan-friendly candle is natural oil. The wax is firm but delicate. What attracts people the most is the crystalized effect of the candle, making it a good choice for those who like colorful embellishments. The palm wax candleshave long-lasting burn and outstanding scent throw but cost more than paraffin wax. This type of wax is associated with environmental and labor implications in South Asia forests, involving deforestation, labor exploitation, and logging. As a consumer, we can be conscious of ecological consequences of our choices with research. That’s why we have chosen to make the candles we offer to you with natural soy wax candle!

2. Natural Soy Wax Candle

Natural soy wax candles are made of oil extracted from soybeans. Clean burn, cold and hot scent throw, and long burn times are the most attractive attributes. It is also a more affordable option compared to coconut wax and beeswax candles for consumers who like vegan-friendly clean burning candles. In addition to 100% soy wax candles, a soy blend wax option also exists. It combines at least 51% soy with other oil waxes, generally coconut or paraffin. The soy wax that we source is produced in USA from US grown soybeans because we like to keep our supply chain as close to us as we can so that our carbon footprint is as low as possible.

B. Luxurious Environmentally Friendly Choice

3. Beeswax Candle

Many describe it as the oldest candle-making wax because candle relics have been found in ancient cave dwellings and in ancient pyramids. Beeswax has a longer history compared to soy wax candles. Beeswax candles were also found in Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.). Unlike the previous types, this is a byproduct of a honey-making process. This “bee procedure” renders the wax to become yellowish color and contains natural sweetness without adding extra aromas. The natural sweetness hot throw (meaning it delivers a good strong scent), long-lasting burning hours, and non-toxic nature of beeswax are all part of the charm of natural beeswax candles.

Drawbacks to beeswax:

    • Price disadvantage / less affordability
    • Exposure to heat can easily damage the candle
    • Not vegan-friendly

“What if I want candles that are vegan-friendly?” you may wonder. Every problem has a solution, just like Bill Gates’ alternate meat substitute. There are other alternatives as well if vegan-friendly goods are preferred:

4. Coconut Wax Candle

Coconut wax candles have desirable characteristics such as a long-lasting burn time and outstanding cold throw, similar to a soy wax candle. It is a newbie in the market. However, it also costs more than many other plant-based waxes, such as a palm or soy wax candle. A coconut wax candle is a high-quality luxurious option if you prefer a vegan option however there is a higher carbon cost to using coconut wax in the USA due to processing and across the world shipping distances.

C. General Choice in the Market

5. Paraffin Candle

Paraffin wax is composed of saturated hydrocarbons and is colorless, scentless, and tasteless. Several widely used purposes include

    • Skincare
    • Cosmetics
    • Spa treatments
    • Pain reliever
    • Stationary
    • Candles

Paraffin wax candles are one of the most common types of candles because of the price advantage. However, compared to soy wax candles, burning a paraffin candle will generate undesirable chemicals into the air creating negative health impacts. Although paraffin wax candles are a popular type of scented candle, they have a poor score for  health safety and environmental impacts.

6. Gel Wax Candle

Panreco company owns the patent for this type of wax, a combination of resin and mineral oil. A gel wax candle is a great choice for a home decorator because of its beautiful color selections. Even though the produced flame is viewed as health-friendly, the released chemicals may be harmful to the environment (same as paraffin candles) because it is a byproduct of refined inorganic oil. Now, let’s talk about natural soy wax candles’ benefits. A soy wax candle composes a great list of characteristics that you may find interested:

    • Renewable resource
    • Eco environmentally friendly
    • Non-Toxic Resource
    • Vegan Friendly
    • Affordability

Soy Based Wax Candle Benefits

1. Utilize Renewable Resource

This kind of resource becomes more and more important as time passes because of the increased human population. Protecting the environment indirectly guards our next generation. Paraffin wax is extracted from petroleum oil, while the soy is a byproduct of soybeans. But what exactly does a renewable resource mean? To put it simply, it is a source that can be regenerated and produce clean energy to reduce pollution. Several examples include:

    • Wood
    • Water
    • Wind

2. Environmentally Friendly

Coconut and soy-based wax have less association with deforestation. Besides plant-based wax candles, ADK also offers positive reviews for our handmade Eco Soap Bars. Here are four of our most popular artisan soaps for you and your loved ones. The marigold soap bar is one of my favorites. If you are interested in my inspiration, click here.

3. Natural Non-Toxic Resource

A soy wax candle made from soybeans releases cleaner burns than traditional paraffin candles. The chemicals released with paraffin wax have been proven by research. Health-conscious consumers can choose natural non-toxic options, such as coconut wax, palm wax, beeswax, or soy wax candles, to provide you with a scented atmosphere.

4. Vegan Friendly

Beeswax is associated with bees and animal rights while plant-based waxes can be a choice vegan individuals can enjoy. Candles made from coconut, or soy are all great options for making an eco environmentally friendly candle.

5. Affordability

Between the two environmentally friendly choices above, coconut wax candles are less affordable than candles made with soybean wax. In another word, soy wax candles have an advantage of affordability. If we are looking for an eco environmentally friendly scented candle or a gift for our loved ones, soy candles are an outstanding choice.
